Academy School

Abstract

Created as an affiliated school of Berea College, the Academy served as a Senior High School. In 1938, reorganization abolishes the Academy by adding the ninth and tenth grades to the Foundation School, thus creating the Lower Division (Grades 11-12, College Freshman and Sophomore years) and Upper Division (College Junior and Senior years) to the College.

Charles Noble Shutt Papers

Abstract In his forty-seven year association with Berea College, Charles Noble Shutt touched virtually every aspect of the college from the placement of closets in Draper building to the organization of the academic departments. Ladies Board of Care

Abstract In 1866, the Berea College Board of Trustees appointed a Ladies Board of Care (though no explicit authority or budget accompanied the appointment). Mildred Hudson Hannaford Papers

Abstract

Mildred Hudson Hannaford was born on November 24, 1896 in Lynn, Massachusetts. In 1914 she enrolled in Berea College after graduating from the Berea Academy. She graduated from the music department in 1916. Her father was Rev. Howard Hudson, who worked as the Foreman in Woodwork Repairs and as the Superintendent of Janitors at Berea College beginning in 1904 and through Mildred’s time at Berea.

Orla Burch Perry attended Berea College (Academy)  from 1922-1925 and lettered in tennis, track and basketball.  Perry's father, William Newton Burch, had attended Berea in the late 1890s and went on to become a teacher in Clay County.  Her grandson, Joseph Perry, also attended Berea in the mid-1990s.
